Need a machine that keeps working hour after hour? A heavy duty cycle crane is built for exactly that. We rent the Liebherr HS 845 HD, a tracked duty cycle crane with 80 tonnes lifting capacity, on a dry hire basis. You bring your own operator. We deliver the machine worldwide from our terminal in the Port of Rotterdam.

What is a heavy duty cycle crane?

A heavy duty cycle crane is a crawler crane designed for constant, repetitive work. Its structure is loaded and unloaded at least once a minute, often for a full shift. A standard lifting crane may pick up a load only a few times a day.

That constant stress calls for a different build. A heavy duty cycle crane has a heavier steel structure, strong free-fall winches and an engine powerful enough to run several movements at the same time. That’s why it can handle heavy attachments such as dragline buckets, clamshell grabs and vibratory hammers, day after day.

Duty cycle crawler crane or lattice boom crawler crane: what is the difference

Both machines run on tracks and often use a lattice boom. The difference lies in how they work. A lattice boom crawler crane lifts heavy loads slowly and carefully, for example a steel module or a bridge section. A duty cycle crawler crane repeats the same movement all day, with a bucket or grab on the rope.

Our Liebherr HS 845 HD has a lattice boom, but it is built for cyclic work. Planning a one-off heavy lift instead? Then a crawler crane or an all terrain lattice boom crane is usually the better fit. On soft or wet ground, the tracked undercarriage of a duty cycle crane keeps the machine stable during long working days.

Crawler dragline, grab and foundation work with a duty cycle crane

A heavy duty cycle crane shines wherever material has to move non-stop. Mining and civil contractors use it for:

  • Crawler dragline work: pulling a bucket through water or loose soil to extract sand and gravel
  • Dredging: deepening ponds, lakes and waterways
  • Grab work: loading and unloading bulk material with a clamshell grab
  • Foundation work: running diaphragm wall grabs, casing machines and vibratory hammers

In sand and gravel pits, the crane often stands at the water’s edge for months. That means reliability matters more than anything. A heavy duty cycle crane is made for that kind of long-term job, as long as your operator has experience with rope-operated attachments.

How to choose the right cable excavator for your project

In German-speaking markets, a duty cycle crane is often called a cable excavator (Seilbagger). Whatever the name, the choice comes down to a few questions. How heavy is your bucket or grab when it’s full? How far do you need to reach? And how much line pull does the job need?

Think about transport too. A lighter cable excavator is easier to move between sites, while a heavier one gives more stability and capacity. The Liebherr HS 845 HD combines 80 tonnes lifting capacity with a 24,000 kg counterweight on a tracked carrier. For most dragline and grab work in extraction, that’s a solid balance between power and mobility.

Worldwide heavy duty cycle crane rental from Rotterdam

We are a family business with more than 50 years of experience in cranes and heavy equipment. Our 14-hectare terminal in the Port of Rotterdam has 200 metres of quay and 9 metres of draught. That makes it straightforward to ship a heavy duty cycle crane to projects abroad.

All maintenance is handled in-house by our own team. You work with a small, experienced group of people and short communication lines. Rental terms are clear, pricing is competitive and the service is no-nonsense.

We rent on a dry hire basis: you get the machine, your own crew operates it. Looking for other lifting options? Browse all our cranes or request a quote for the Liebherr HS 845 HD.

Q&A

Frequently asked questions

What does duty cycle mean for a crane?

Duty cycle describes how often a crane is loaded and unloaded. A duty cycle crane repeats this at least once a minute, usually for hours on end, with a bucket, grab or hammer.

What is the difference between a heavy duty cycle crane and a heavy duty crawler crane?

A heavy duty cycle crane works continuously with attachments such as buckets and grabs. A heavy duty crawler crane is a lifting crane for extreme loads, starting at 500 tonnes.

Can a duty cycle crane be used as a dragline?

Yes. Dragline work is one of its main uses. The crane pulls a bucket through water or soil, which makes it well suited to sand and gravel extraction and dredging.

Do you rent duty cycle cranes with an operator?

No. We only offer dry hire. You rent the machine and use your own experienced operator. We deliver the crane worldwide from our terminal in the Port of Rotterdam.

How much does it cost to rent a duty cycle crane?

The price depends on the rental period, destination and transport. Send us your project details and we will prepare a clear quote for the Liebherr HS 845 HD.
