What is a rough terrain crane?
A rough terrain crane is a mobile crane with a telescopic boom, mounted on a carrier with large off-road tyres. Most models have four-wheel drive, several steering modes such as crab steering, and high ground clearance. One cab is used for both driving and lifting.
Before each lift, outriggers extend from the carrier to keep the crane stable. Setup is quick, because the telescopic boom needs no assembly on site. The result is a crane that moves easily around a single jobsite, even when the access roads are not finished yet. Think of groundwork, road construction, drainage and utility projects.
Rough terrain crane vs all terrain crane: what is the difference
The main difference is how the crane travels. An all terrain crane can drive on public roads from one site to the next. A rough terrain crane usually can’t. It goes to your project on a trailer and does its work there.
On site, the RT crane has the upper hand. It is more compact, has a smaller turning circle and handles mud, gravel and slopes better. For short jobs at several locations, an all terrain crane is often the smarter choice. For weeks of lifting on one demanding site, a rough terrain crane usually wins.
A truck crane is a third option. It travels fast on the road, but it needs firm, level ground to work safely.
Rough terrain mobile cranes from 30 to 100 tonnes
Our fleet covers the most common capacity classes. Each rough terrain mobile crane below is listed with its maximum lifting capacity:
-
- 30 tonnes: Terex RT35 and Terex RC30-1
- 45 to 60 tonnes: Terex RT45 and Sany SRE600
- 75 to 80 tonnes: Terex Quadstar 1075, Terex Quadstar 1075L and Terex RT780
90 to 100 tonnes: Terex RT90, XCMG XCR90_E, Terex RT100 and Liebherr LRT1100-2.1
Keep in mind that maximum capacity applies at a short radius. The further the load sits from the crane, the less it can lift. That’s why the load chart matters more than the headline figure. We can share full specifications for every model on request.

How to choose the right RT crane for your site
Start with the heaviest load you need to lift. Then check the radius and the lifting height, because both affect capacity. Next, look at the site itself. How much room is there to drive around and set up the outriggers?
Ground conditions matter too. A rough terrain crane copes well with difficult terrain, but safe lifting still depends on correct outrigger setup and enough ground bearing capacity. Your team assesses this before the crane starts work. Finally, plan the transport to site and the length of the project. Planning extreme lifts of several hundred tonnes? Then a heavy duty crawler crane is the category to look at.

Q&A
Frequently asked questions
Can I request more photos or technical details?
Yes. We can provide additional photos, videos, and full specifications for any crane in our inventory.
What lifting capacities are available in rough terrain cranes?
Our inventory includes rough terrain cranes ranging from 30 ton to over 100 ton capacity, depending on the model and manufacturer.
Do you export rough terrain cranes to Morocco?
Yes, we regularly export rough terrain cranes to Morocco and other African countries. Our cranes are located in Holland and ready for fast export.
You can view our available rough terrain cranes for Morocco here.
Can you pick and carry with a rough terrain crane?
Yes, many models can carry a load over short distances on site. Capacity and travel speed are then reduced, so always follow the pick and carry values in the load chart.
Is a rough terrain crane the same as a mobile crane?
A rough terrain crane is one type of mobile crane. Other types include all terrain cranes and truck cranes. What sets the RT crane apart is its off-road carrier and four-wheel drive.
How much can a rough terrain crane lift?
Our rough terrain cranes lift from 30 to 100 tonnes. The actual capacity depends on the model, the boom length and the radius. The further away the load, the less the crane can lift.
Do you rent rough terrain cranes with an operator?
No. We only offer dry hire. You rent the machine and use your own qualified operator. We ship the crane from our Rotterdam terminal to your project, wherever it is.
Can you drive a rough terrain crane on public roads?
Usually not. Most rough terrain cranes are not approved for road travel, so they are transported to site on a trailer. Once there, they move freely around the jobsite.
